One is a do-it-yourself floating lantern event. Los Angeles has so many different Asian communities it has multiple festivals. If possible, plan to be somewhere to see a parade or participate in festivities. Or by the Chinese calendar, the years 47. The Lantern Festival is Februand February 8, 2020. Red lanterns are hung everywhere, with riddles on the side, but the floats, and fireworks, often have as their subject the much longed-for coming of spring and spring flowers, birds, dragons and fish. What started with monks honoring Buddha with simple paper red lanterns lighted with candles has, since the advent of LEDs and Asian economic success, morphed into something that in Taiwan challenges the Rose Bowl parade. All across Asia, and indeed anywhere in the world where there are Asian communities, there are Lantern Festivals and parades of lanterns. For Lunar New Year, however, it is also good.Īlthough the formal holiday ends after a week or so, 12 days later there is another festival that marks the end to this holiday season, the first full moon, and the occasion for the Lantern Festival. And just like Thanksgiving, food is plentiful. Flowers are often fake, especially peach blossoms. When it comes time for the annual Lunar New Year, or Golden Festival, or Spring Festival, however the People’s Republic of China defines it, the event encompasses not only that actual date of the New Year, February 5, but weeks of travel before and after, and some time in between, to see relatives. According to the other legend, the origins of the tradition lie in a gesture of adoration towards Buddha and dates from the first century B.C.China is slightly smaller than the entire United States, but has the largest population of any country on earth. The village inhabitants found out, however, and, in an effort to save themselves, lit up the village with red lanterns and fireworks in an attempt to make it look as though it was burning. The festivals has its origins in two legends, the first of which tells the story of the Jade-Emperor, who wished to burn down a village because the inhabitants had killed his favourite stork. Lantern festivals are held in China to celebrate the end of the New Year festivities as well as in August, during the Festival of the Moon. According to the Chinese calendar, the 19th of February this year signifies the beginning of year 4713, the Year of the Goat. The festival will also include a range of activities, such as Chinese lantern workshops, which will be held from Thursday to Saturday beginning on the 16th of January, and the celebration of the Chinese New Year, which will take place on the 19th of February. The exhibition is divided into eight sections, one of which is a tribute to Catalan cultural heritage and includes pieces by Gaudí and Miró. The figures were all manufactured in China and transported to Barcelona by boat to be displayed in 9000 m2 of exhibition space in an attempt to offer visitors an insight into the traditions of one of the world’s oldest cultures through its lanterns and other folkloric elements. Created by hand by numerous artisans from China’s Szechuan province, the figures range from one to six metres in length and represent traditional Chinese symbols and motifs. The Chinese Lantern Festival, an exhibition of 500 gigantic silk figures illuminated from the inside, is an attempt to acquaint the general public with aspects of this ancient culture. ![]()
